The May Queen

I meant to post these on May Day, but I got distracted and forgot. Mira was Queen of the May, of course. Princess might have been a bit put out at someone else being called queen, but since it’s an honorary title that only lasts one day, I didn’t consider it an infringement on her royal territory. A ewe with two lambs and a grandlamb isn’t exactly eligible to be May Queen anyway.

They said she’s lovely as the spring; imagine my surprise
To find that they were right and hadn’t said the half.
The careless sunlight in her eyes, the petals in her hair,
I saw how he could love her, the May Queen standing there.

“This lambie doesn’t play like my brothers!”

Mira was very curious about the stone lamb by the driveway. She was less enthusiastic about her crown of flowers; she kept trying to shake them off.

“These flowers aren’t tasty, Mommy!”

“That’s better!”

We had to pause halfway through the photoshoot so Mira could drink the Royal Bottle. Then her majesty decreed it was time to eat lots of yummy dandelions. Yellow dandelions are a sheep candy so delicious that you almost never see any in the sheep field anymore, only in the yard.

“Gimme that dandelion, Mommy!”

“Yum, yum!”

It’s good to be queen, even for a day.

  1. I didn’t know sheep loved dandelions either!! She looks so soft and fuzzy. Does she still sit in your lap?

    • She does, but she’s more interested in climbing all over me and chewing my clothes than in snuggling. She has a lot of important playing to do, no time for long naps anymore. 🙂
